Under 65 Health Insurance
What is Under 65 Health Insurance?
Under 65 health insurance is for people who are younger then 65 years old.
Why is it age 65? Because when you turn 65 you become eligible for Medicare, and those who qualify for Medicare can not get health insurance through the state health insurance exchange.
This exchange came into effect on March 23rd, 2010 as a result of the Affordable Care Act, or some people refer to it as Obamacare. When President Obama was president he wanted to make health insurance affordable for all people and of all health conditions.
Before the Affordable Care Act, it was hard for people with serious health challenges to get health insurance. If the insurance company accepted them, then their premiums (monthly payments) were generally higher due to health risks.
Now because of the Affordable Care Act, anybody can get health insurance! It doesn't matter whether you are as healthy as a horse or have 2 months to live. Through the Affordable Care Act, everybody can get health insurance no matter your health status.
But there is a catch. Because everybody is now able to get these plans, and the insurance companies can't deny them coverage, the insurance companies have been raising their premiums to compensate for people of higher health risk.
This is why states offer people tax credits for their health insurance! These tax credits are based on your income. The more money you make the lower of a tax credit you will get, and the lower your income is the higher your tax credit will be. These tax credits can help lower your monthly payments to make them more affordable. Even as low as $0 per month for health insurance!
The way you can apply for a tax credit is through Your Health Idaho. Your Health Idaho is the state health insurance exchange for the Affordable Care Act plans. All you need to do is fill out the financial application and the state will give you a tax credit based off of your income. Then just choose a plan that best suits your needs. It's that simple!
