Health Share's

What are Health Shares?

A health share (also known as a health care sharing ministry or medical cost-sharing program) is an alternative to traditional health insurance where members contribute a monthly amount to a shared fund that helps cover medical expenses. These programs are typically faith-based and require members to follow certain lifestyle guidelines, such as refraining from smoking or excessive drinking.

Unlike traditional insurance, health shares are not legally required to cover pre-existing conditions, preventive care, or essential health benefits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Instead, they operate on a voluntary basis, where members submit medical bills, and the organization distributes funds to help pay for eligible expenses.

Pros of Health Shares

Typically lower monthly cost compared to traditional health insurance

Flexibility in choosing providers since they often don't use networks

Coverage for major medical expenses

Cons of Health Shares

No legal guarantee that claims will be paid

Limited or no coverage for pre-existing conditions, preventative care, or prescriptions

May require adherence to specific religious or lifestyle beliefs
